You might be asking, why should you style your bed!? I mean who really cares, right?

Let’s just be honest here: there’s something so soothing and satisfying about a made bed. We don’t want to put in the effort to make it, but the reward after a long day is almost euphoric. Every vacation I’ve ever taken ended with tired feet, pure exhaustion, more shopping bags than I’ll ever publicly admit. But looking at turned down bed was better than a 5-course meal, and you know how I love food! Those crisp sheets all tucked into the bed… you know what I’m talking about. On the flip side, I’ve refused service trying to be eco-friendly and overly cautious. Then I returned “home” after a long day to a wrinkled bed with the flat sheet rolled at the bottom was just… UGH. It was daunting thinking of making that bed just so I can ruin it again the following morning.

So it comes as no surprise that this concept is highly favored and even required amongst some of the top execs, branches of the military and so many more. Authors, like the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Make Your Bed, Admiral William H. McRaven, preaches, “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.” His concept of the small things matter and the gratification of making your bed in the morning intend to lead his readers to a more rewarding, satisfying and productive day.

There’s so many ways to style your bed but no one particular way is the RIGHT way. As a Certified Interior Decorator, I can tell you that I style each bedroom for my clients differently, based of their style and how the room feels. With that being said, there are key components that separate a made bed from a homeowner vs a professionally styled bed.

Here’s a quick and easy guide to help you achieve a professionally made bed each and every time.

Simply put, how you style your bed requires layering of pillows and bedding to ‘build up’ a bed. Adding layers is key to having a styled bed that looks inviting and comfortable, regardless of the time of year. As a general rule, the less pillows the more relaxed the vibe. The alternative of more pillows will feel more formal.

#1 – Euro Sham

A Euro sham, also known as a Euro pillow is a square decorative pillow for a bed. At its simplest, Euro pillows are an added way to dress up a made bed. These large, square pillows typically sit behind the regular bed pillows, propped up against the headboard.

#2 – Standard Sham

Standard Sham’s are typically made of fancier materials that match or compliment your duvet and often have a slit in the middle of their backs. They use a standard pillow for insert. This pillow serves both form and function as this pillow is intended to be slept on.

#3 – Standard Case

Pillowcases are slightly different from a sham in that they are usually open at one end and made of simple sheet fabric. They also require a standard pillow insert and serve the same purpose as a sham.

#4 – Accent Pillow

Small decorative soft furnishing item. Also called throw pillow because they’re not part of the basic design, but are “tossed” onto it.

#5 – Lumbar Pillow

Under most circumstances, I choose either a throw pillow or lumber pillow but both can be utilized successfully.

#6 – Flat Sheet

A standard item in all sheet sets. I like to take this moment to speak to my client’s about how they sleep. It may sound a bit unusual but I have found a majority of my clients do not like incorporating the flat sheet and instead prefer just a fitted sheet and comforter.

#7 – Comforter

A type of bedding made of two lengths of fabric or covering sewn together and filled with insulated filler for added comfort and heat.

#8 – Duvet

Made from sheeting, the duvet cover is a decorative and protective covering for an insert—the duvet or comforter. It comes in various weights and fillings. In winter months, you can utilize the duvet and in the warmer months, place the duvet at the foot of the bed in place of the throw.

#9 – Fitted Sheet

Another standard item in all sheet sets. The purpose of a fitted bottom sheet is to keep it from slipping off the mattress while the bed is in use.

#10 – Boxspring Cover

The best way to protect your box springs is to use a box spring cover. Also known as an encasement. A box spring cover can offer one or more of the following features: Seals out bed bugs and dust miles. Protection from spills, stains, and accidents (helps prevent mold and mildew)

I hope this guide has given you a quick and easy step by step guide on how to style your bed and why it’s so important. Above all else, I hope it helped you gain some insight on the benefits of boosting your mood and overall productivity.
