As soon as you become an HOS client, we step into this foundational phase with in-depth lifestyle conversations and conceptual designs. We define the scope, investment range, and timeline while collaborating with any necessary contractors early on so the unexpected becomes more expected. It’s not just preparation — it’s essential, intentional work that sets your project up for success.
Phase 2: Designing
Building from the clarity established in the Exploratory Phase, we help you fully visualize the concepts. Floor plans, finishes, and furnishings come together in a carefully assembled presentation, laid out for you to see, touch, and experience. It’s the first time you can picture your daily life unfolding within each exceptionally designed space. Every sample, swatch, and drawing creates confidence, cultivates excitement, and delivers that defining moment of “This is it” — as we refine each element until reality exceeds expectation.
Phase 3: Procuring
We’ve got this — completely. We manage every intricate detail of your project’s design puzzle, from facilitating complex orders and timelines to orchestrating deliveries through our professional network. Your pieces and investment remain our top priority, ensuring careful handling throughout and white-glove delivery. This essential coordination keeps your project flowing seamlessly while protecting everything that matters.
Phase 4: Coming Home

In 6-8 hours, your space evolves before your eyes as we place every piece and add those final styling touches. When should I hire an interior designer for a renovation or new build?
Earlier than you might think. For renovations and new builds, we recommend reaching out 6–12 months before you hope to begin construction. Much of the design work happens before a contractor ever steps on site—floor plans, lighting, millwork, materials, finishes, and all the decisions that need to work together before they’re built.
Once construction begins, large-scale projects can take anywhere from 18 months to 3 years to complete, depending on the scope. Bringing us in early gives us the time to plan the home as a whole, coordinate with your project team, and help prevent expensive changes once construction is underway.
how is your design fee calculated?
Our design fees are based on the scope and complexity of your project rather than a percentage of your overall construction budget. For renovations and new builds, we establish a flat design fee for the design and documentation required before construction begins.
Once construction is underway, Construction Oversight is billed as a monthly fee for the duration of that phase. Furnishings and procurement are handled separately based on the scope of your project.
Every home is different, so we’ll talk through your project and anticipated investment before developing a proposal. You’ll know what our fees are and what they cover before deciding whether to move forward.
What kind of budget should I plan for a renovation or new build?
Construction budgets vary significantly depending on the size of the home, scope of work, level of customization, and materials involved. A renovation of an existing home also comes with different variables than building from the ground up.
Early in the process, we’ll help you establish whether your goals and investment are aligned. From there, we design with that investment in mind and collaborate with your builder or contractor as costs become more defined.
The goal isn’t to make every decision based on price. It’s to understand where your investment matters most, make informed tradeoffs when necessary, and avoid designing a home that can’t realistically be built within the budget you’ve established.
How involved do I need to be in the process?
You’ll be involved in the decisions that need your voice without being responsible for managing the design process yourself.
We’ll ask for your input at key points throughout the project, present our recommendations, and give you the information you need to make decisions confidently. Between those moments, we’re handling the details, coordinating with your project team, and keeping the larger design moving forward.
You’re not handing us the keys and disappearing—but you also shouldn’t feel like designing your home has become your second job.

If you already have your team in place, we’re happy to join them. If you don’t, we can also help you assemble the right team for your project.
Will I be able to see my design before construction begins?
Yes. You’ll review and approve the design before it moves into construction. We use floor plans, elevations, material selections, and renderings where helpful so you can understand how the pieces come together before they’re built.
The goal is to make the important decisions on paper first—when changes are much easier and less expensive to make than they are once construction is underway.
Do you handle furnishings after construction is complete?
Yes. In fact, we prefer to think about furnishings long before construction is complete. Furniture layouts influence everything from room planning and lighting to electrical locations and how a space ultimately functions.
When furnishings are included in your project, we carry the design through furniture, window treatments, rugs, art, accessories, and final installation so the home feels finished—not simply finished with construction.
